The Sydney University Spiders men’s basketball team finished agonisingly short of a historic victory in their first ever match, eventually going down to the Central Coast Crusaders by one point in the first round of the Waratah Youth League Division 2 at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre on Saturday night.

Taking to the floor for the first time, after the amalgamation of the Sydney University Basketball Club and the Hornsby Spiders Basketball Association, the boys from Sydney Uni got off to a confident start as they traded baskets with their Central Coast rivals.

The game was tight from the start with constant lead changes and little chance for either team to mount any sizeable lead. The high-scoring affair ended up going down to the wire. With the scores tied with 30 seconds of the match, the Crusaders were able to make a number of big shots to take the game by just one point, winning 73-72.

James Spence (18 points) and Josh Russell both top scored for Sydney Uni.
