The Sydney Uni Sparks were able to continue their 4 game win streak with a convincing 22 point win over the Frankston Blues on Saturday night. The Sparks dominant second half was key to their eventual 85-63 victory over the visiting Blues. The win gives the Sparks a 6-3 win/loss record as they approach the mid-way point of the season.

Captain Shanae Greaves was really pleased with her team’s performance and their ability to show determination to grind out the win in Round 8. “It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but I’m so proud with how our team persevered on the weekend. We had plenty of contributors and continue to show improvement every weekend.”

The Sparks have been working on valuing possession in recent weeks and they really put it into practice against Frankston. With only 7 turnovers for the entire game, they were able to remain composed under pressure and make good decisions with the ball. As well as limiting their turnovers, Sydney Uni were tireless on defence throughout the four quarters. They forced the visiting side into 17 turnovers, and were able to capitalise, scoring 22 points off Frankston’s errors.

As the Sparks created more and more pressure on defence, their offence started flowing. They moved the ball really well throughout the game finishing with 30 team assists. This free flowing offensive style of play has become more apparent over recent weeks. The team are moving the ball efficiently and not relying solely on isolation basketball which has made the Sparks difficult to contain.

Tahlia Tupaea is solidifying herself as a force to be reckoned with, leading the Sparks in multiple categories with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Susannah Walmsley finished with 15 points and Maddie O’Hehir also had a double figure total with 10 points of her own. The Sparks three inside players, Shanae Greaves, Lara McSpadden and Kim Hodge all finished with 8 points. Greaves also added 6 assists and McSpadden had 7 rebounds.

Next up, the Sparks face an in form Kilsyth Cobras outfit this Friday 22nd May. Tip-off is at 7pm at the Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre.
