Illawarra Stingrays caused the first upset of the Women’s Premier League soccer finals series when they defeated Sydney University 4-1 in their qualifying final at Wilson Park on Sunday.

The Stingrays finished behind Sydney University on the competition ladder but proved too strong on the day for the Students.

Sydney University must now defeat Northbridge FC in a semi-final to have a crack at the 2012 title.

The news was better in the Premier League Reserve Grade qualifying final where Sydney University defeated NWS Koalas 3-2 to advance to a semi-final against Marconi Stallions.

Sydney University’s Under 12 side went down 2-1 to NWS Koalas and will have to win their semi-final against Northbridge FC to advance to the final.

In the Men’s Super League Grade 20 competition, Sydney University advanced to a semi-final berth with a 3-2 win over Northern Tigers in their qualifying final at Jensen Park.

Sydney University will meet Spirit FC in a semi-final kicking off a 12.30 on Sunday (venue to be advised).

The Men’s Super Youth League qualifying finals saw Sydney University advance to a semi-final shot in Grade 15 with a 2-0 win over Western NSW Mariners, and a semi-final berth in Grade 16 with a 2-1 extra time win over Northern Tigers.

The 15s will meet Central Coast Mariners Academy at Cook Park, Mt Pritchard, from 11.45 on Sunday, while the 16s will tackle Fraser Park FC at Garside Park at 1.15pm on Saturday.
