Former Southern Design Sydney Uni Flames representative Belinda Snell has been selected in her third consecutive Australian Olympic Games women’s basketball squad.

Snell, who has an impressive two silver medals to show for her efforts, will be hoping that it will be a case of ‘third time lucky’ and that the 12 member Opals squad can go one better in London.

The versatile guard or forward had a sensational 2011/12 WNBL season with the Flames and she was rewarded with her selection in the WNBL All-Star Five.

The Opals will be attempting to win an elusive gold medal for the first time, but they will have to achieve this without star player Penny Taylor who has been ruled out of the tournament with an injury.

Taylor’s demise is problematic for an Opals team which will need everything to go right to unseat the sport’s dominant nation, the United States.

The Opals are in a different group to the US and look certainties to make the top four and quarter-finals, from their six-team pool.

But the make-up of their group is yet to be determined with two teams still to be added from the Olympic qualifying tournament in July.

Highly-rated Czech Republic, who are yet to qualify but knocked Australia out of the last world championships, are among the potential banana skins who could bob up in their group.

Having been beaten in the last three gold medal matches, the Opals can again expect to face the US should they proceed through the group and knockout stage.

Snell’s former teammate and fellow former Flames player Natalie Stafford has been selected in the Great Britain Olympic Games women’s basketball team.
