ACUVUE Sydney Uni Flames have boosted their 2009-10 roster with the signing of former Perth Lynx MVP and WNBL All Star 5 member Deanna Smith to their WNBL team.

Coming off a highly successful season with the Perth Lynx, in which the 28-year-old averaged 20.8 points per game, Smith said that she wanted to join the thriving Flames’ program in the hope of chasing her Opal dream.

‘Everything that I do at the moment is in process to represent Australia at the London Olympics,” Smith said.

“I think that it is a really, really exciting time for the Australian Opals and it’s something that I really want to be a part of and I am prepared to do the work to ensure that I am not left out of that team.’

Smith said the Flames program offered her the best opportunities in her basketball development and also her education. She will be joining the Sydney University community as a student, and plans to complete her teaching degree while playing with the Flames.

The 179cm Smith hopes to push herself in the upcoming WNBL season. She sees great potential for growth under Head Coach Karen Dalton and plans to train hard with Sydney University’s well-regarded strength and conditioning coach, Marty Harland.

Smith joins fellow Opal camp team-mates Alicia Poto and Eva Afeaki, who toured China and Europe earlier this year.
