The University of Sydney has recognised one of its most respected and influential contributors by awarding distinguished lawyer and alumna, Simone Whetton, an Honorary Fellowship for her outstanding and sustained service to student life, governance, and the wider university community.
Conferred in the historic surroundings of the Great Hall on Monday, 11 May 2026, the award acknowledges decades of leadership, mentorship and advocacy that helped shape the student experience at the University of Sydney across generations.
For many within the University community, Simone Whetton’s contribution extends far beyond titles or board positions. Her impact can be found in the systems she strengthened, the organisations she helped guide, and the countless students whose university experiences have been improved by her behind-the-scenes work.
The ceremony, presided over by Chancellor David Thodey AO, celebrated a career defined not only by professional excellence but by an enduring commitment to service.
“This award recognises Simone’s tireless support of student engagement, her exceptional legal and governance service and her unwavering advocacy for the student experience at the University of Sydney”, Chancellor Thodey said.
“She has maintained a deep and enduring connection to the University, and her contributions have had a lasting impact on our community”.
For Sydney Uni Sport, Simone’s recognition carries particular significance.
Over many years, she has played a pivotal role in helping shape the modern governance and strategic direction of the organisation. In 2019, Simone was appointed Deputy Chair of the newly incorporated Sydney Uni Sport Board during a critical period of organisational transitions.
Simone brought both legal expertise and measured leadership, helping establish frameworks and policies that continue to support the organisation today. Her influence across board governance, club negotiations, policy development and long-term strategic planning will be felt for decades to come.
Importantly, her contributions were never limited to governance alone.
Simone has become a trusted mentor and advisor to a generation of student leaders, consistently advocating for opportunities that made sport, student leadership and campus life more accessible and inclusive. Her work helps to ensure that students not only have opportunities to participate but also meaningful opportunities to lead.
Her commitment to Sydney Uni Sport has also been deeply personal. Alongside her family, Simone contributed to the TAG Family Grandstand campaign, supporting infrastructure that will benefit student sport and the wider University community for years to come.
Offering her reflections on the recognition, Chair of Sydney Uni Sport Jane Spring AM said: “Many of us have had the privilege of working alongside Simone and have seen first-hand her remarkable ability to combine outstanding professional expertise with deep humanity and care for students and community. She has given so much of herself to the University over many years, quietly, thoughtfully and with immense integrity. We are absolutely delighted to see her contribution recognised through this Honorary Fellowship.”
After her term with Sydney Uni Sport, she has taken the role of Chair of the Nominations Committee and remains connected to Sydney Uni Sport.
Across the broader University landscape, Simone’s contribution has been equally profound.
A graduate of the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws, later followed by a Diploma of Finance, Simone went on to become a partner at Colin Biggers & Paisley, building a distinguished legal career while maintaining a strong and active connection to the University.
From 2013 to 2016, she served as a senate-appointed Director of the University of Sydney Union, where she became instrumental in strengthening governance structures and legal processes.
Her work included advising on confidentiality frameworks, in-camera procedures, board reporting and dispute management, contributions that helped modernise governance practices and strengthen institutional accountability.
Even after completing her board term, Simone continued to dedicate significant time to the University community. For almost a decade, she has served as Electoral Arbiter or Returning Officer for USU elections, overseeing processes central to student representation and democratic governance.
Her volunteer work for our students continues today as she currently serves the Returning Officer for the 2026 USU election.
Alongside these responsibilities, Simone has chaired the USU’s People and Culture Committee since 2021, continuing to provide strategic leadership grounded in integrity, fairness and a genuine commitment to student welfare.
What makes Simone’s contribution particularly remarkable is the breadth of her service.
Whether mentoring student directors, lecturing within the Business School, judging the Palladian Cup, supporting legal matters, or advocating for equity and inclusion across campus life, her involvement has consistently reflected a belief in creating stronger opportunities and experiences for students.
Her recognition as an Honorary Fellow is not simply an acknowledgement of years served. It is recognition of the culture she helped foster, one built on service, integrity, inclusion and community.
For Sydney Uni Sport and the wider University of Sydney community, Simone’s legacy is already firmly established. This Honorary Fellowship serves as a fitting tribute to a lifetime dedicated to strengthening the institution, communities and student experience that define university life.
