The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames have secured the signing of former US college forward and current Hobart Lady Chargers SEABL star Kathleen Scheer.

Scheer, who played for US basketball nursery Duke University for four years before graduating in 2012, will link up with the Flames for the 2013/14 WNBL season once her commitments with Hobart end at the completion of the SEABL season, either in August or early September.

The 188cm forward has been a vital ingredient in Hobart’s charge into fifth position, averaging 17.5 points, 1.7 assists and 8.4 rebounds per game.

Scheer spoke of her excitement of playing in the WNBL for the Flames after showing plenty of promise with Bendigo in last season’s WNBL Preseason Tournament, before sustaining a season ending injury.

“The SEABL is a great competition, but I can’t wait to test myself in the WNBL,” explained Scheer. “I’m also really looking forward to meeting all of the girls.”

Scheer was enthusiastic when asked to describe her game which was developed after 120 appearances for Duke University between 2008 and 2012.

“I like to run the floor and I love rebounding, especially defensive boards,” says Scheer. “I play pretty hard and do the little things that need to be done, like the hustle plays. “

“Duke was really good. With the quality of coaches and training facilities you are constantly improving your game.”

Scheer is also confident that she has made the right basketball decision in heading to the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames.

“I can’t wait to play for Karen (Dalton). She’s been around the game so long and it’s going to be a really good opportunity for me to learn from her. I want to improve every day and I know that there will be the resources at the Flames that I need to improve my game.”

Flames Head Coach Karen Dalton said she was looking forward to working with the 23 year old this season, saying “She’s a hard working player that possesses plenty of athleticism. She will contribute all over the court in terms of scoring, defence and rebounding.”

The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames will play their first 2013/14 WNBL home game against the Dandenong Rangers at Brydens Stadium on Friday October 11 at 7.30pm.
