Sydney University’s remarkable run of premierships in the Sydney Colts competition continued at Concord Oval on Saturday when First and Second Grades successfully defended their crowns and Third Grade lost out to West Harbour.

First Grade Colts, captained by flanker Tom Boidin, won a fourth successive title when they defeated Eastwood 32-17.

Fullback Jack Freeman, centre Chris Jarvis, prop Joe Welch, number eight Jack de Guigand and halfback James Helliwell scored tries for the Students, with Freeman also contributing two conversions and a penalty goal. Number eight Tom Ellem and hooker Tannous Ferris crossed for the Woodies with five-eighth Blake Sutton landing both conversions to go with a penalty goal.

Sydney University have now won eight of the past nine First Grade titles with a run of four from 2002, a loss to Eastwood in the 2006 decider and another run of four since 2007.

Sydney University Second Grade Colts made it five premierships on the trot when they defeated Gordon 31-3 on Saturday.

Winger Ben Cannon, centre Oliver L’Estrange and hooker Tolu Latu scored tries, with fullback Matt Armour landing two conversions and a penalty goal and second-rower Byron Hodge slotting three penalty goals. Second Grade Colts have won eight titles since 2001.

West Harbour proved too strong for Sydney University in the Third Grade Colts decider running in four tries to two in their 35-12 win.

With each of the three Sydney University teams finishing minor premiers, the club had the Colts Club Championship wrapped up several weeks before the finals.

Club president David Mortimer was on hand on Saturday to accept the Eric Spilstead Shield for the Colts Club Championship, which now has Sydney University’s name etched on it for 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
