Sydney Uni Rowing Club had the pleasure of christening two new boats, in the presence of Dr Lesley Lynch (President of the Glebe Society) and Verity Firth (local MP and the Minister for education, last Saturday.
One single scull was named after Erin Crawford, former Captain and a Rowing Blue. Erin has a distinguished competition record including representing Australia at the World Universities Rowing Championships in Nottingham in 2002.
Erin has also been a strong contributor and effective leader, taking on the demanding role of Captain and managing the team at a number of Championships and events such as the Trans Tasman regatta in New Zealand. Erin was elected to the Management Committee of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness and her contribution was greatly appreciated by Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness and by members of our Club,’ Sydney Uni Rowing Club President Jane Spring.
The other single scull was named after Annabel Childs to acknowledge her enduring contribution to the Club. Annabel has been a committed contributor to the Club since joining in 1996.
She has enthusiastically competed both locally and internationally as a master, and regularly volunteered to assist at State and National Championships, as well as the World Masters Games, at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. Annabel has assisted in organising many major fundraising events for the Club and was the Masters Representative on the Club committee for 11 years from 1999,’ said Spring.
Sydney Uni rowers and the committee were gracious to the number of VIPs who attended the event and for the help that they had provided the club with, throughout the club’s season.
In August, the Glebe Sesquicentenary Regatta was held in Blackwattle Bay to commemorate 150 years of Glebe. Sydney University and Glebe Rowing Club rowers raced over a distance of approximately 400 meters in Blackwattle Bay. We owe thanks to the Glebe Society’s Lesley Lynch and Bob Armstrong and to our local MP Verity Firth for making this regatta possible after many years of bureaucratic roadblocks,’ said Spring.
Sydney Uni Rowing Club continues to excel with the club winning the NSW and Australian Championships point-scores in 2009. And only recently winning the NSW Championship overall, again in 2010.
The club looks forward to building on this success, in its new boats.
