Having already had six rowers and a reserve selected for Australian crews at the Beijing Olympic Games, Sydney University Boat Club has another 10 oarsmen and women – and a coach – selected in crews for the Under 23 World Championships and the Junior and Senior A Non-Olympic World Championships.

Competing at the Under 23 regatta at Brandenburg, Germany, from 17-20 July, will be Justin Quigley, James Goswell, Toby Lister and Richard Allsop in the men’s eight, and Charlotte Walters and Renee Kirby in the women’s double. SUBC head coach Phil Bourguignon will be the team coach.

The Non-Olympics World Championships will be held from 22-27 July at Linz-Ottensheim, Austria, where Fergus Pragnell will compete in the men’s coxed pair, Bronwen Watson in the women’s lightweight quad and Ryan Edwards Ashleigh Peppernell in junior crews.

The international rowing season culminates each year with the World Rowing Championships to determine the best in each of the 23 able-bodied and four adaptive boat classes.

During Olympic years, only boat classes which do not compete at the Olympics take part in the World Championships, at the same time, and at the same venue as the Junior World Championships.

SUBC members selected for the Olympic Games include coxswain Marty Rabjohns, Jeremy Stevenson, Matt Ryan, Francis Hegerty, Elizabeth Kell and Brooke Pratley, while Terrence Alfred has been selected as a reserve for all of the men’s crews.

Sydney University will also be represented by David Neuhaus, Natasha Bolsin, Ailsa Tremayne, Emma Costello, Chloe O’Regan and coaches Mark Prater and Alan Bennett at the World University Games to be held in Serbia later this year.

Meanwhile, Sydney University will host the 2008 Trans-Tasman Universities Rowing Challenge in a three race series held in different locations across Sydney.

The annual grudge match between Australian and New Zealand Universities is held on alternate years in New Zealand and Australia.

The Australian contenders each year are the universities that won the men’s and women’s eights, the lightweight men’s coxless four and the women’s quad scull at the preceding Australian University Games, giving the university the right to represent Australia in that boat class at the next Trans Tasman series.

Having won all four boat categories for the first time at last year’s AUG, Sydney University will be boating crews to take on the Kiwis, who are selected into crews from Universities across New Zealand.

With rowing being out of season at this time of the year, the normal lightweight limits have been relaxed to a maximum weight limit of 75kg for males and 62kg for females. A time penalty of one second per 100 grams overweight is imposed if individuals are heavier.

The format is match racing and the first location will be Mosman Rowing Club in Pearl Bay, with racing being conducted on the 2km Middle Harbour course. The second location will be the Nepean River, using the 5km time trial course used for Institute and national team selections. The final venue will be the Olympic course at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.

The men’s eight for the Trans-Tasman regatta includes Andrew Conolly, James Harding, Alex Campbell, Al Matthews, Will Gilbert, Ed Alexander, Matt Vaughan and Matt Grimes, coached by Michael Doyle.

The women’s eight, coached by Alan Bennett, includes Tasha Bolsin, Georgie Harvey, Emma Costello, Lucy Marshall, Chloe O’Regan, Ailsa Tremayne, Emy Huntsman, Sophie Collican and Nell Duly.

The men’s four is made up of Dom Grimm, Dave Neuhaus, James Adams and Ry Kehlet, the lightweight men’s four includes Charles Budd, Ed White, Ed de Carvalho and Phil Grenfell, while the lightweight women’s four consists of Elsa O’Hanlon, Jo Kleydish, Heidi Ainge and Laura Brienesse.
