All nine Sydney University Boat Club (SUBC) rowers selected in the Australian Rowing team for the World Cup will take part in three day camps this weekend as they prepare for the first World Cup of Rowing for 2013, which will be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith on March 23-24.

Tom Sacre, Nick Wheatley, Chris Cunningham-Reid and Jack Hargreaves are part of the Australian men’s eight team, and will fly to Canberra on Thursday night for a training camp at the AIS supervised by national team coaches Jon Driessen and Tim Conrad.

SUBC Club Captain Ed de Carvalho is representing Australia in the lightweight double scull with James Wilson of Mercantile – they have spent the last three days training in Sydney under SUBC Senior Coach Rick van Hooydonk, and will follow up with a further training camp next week.

Sasha Belonogoff and Ryan Edwards (double scull reps) are preparing in Canberra – both have been based at the AIS since late 2012.

SUBC Director of Coaching Mark Prater, along with athletes Nick Purnell (men’s quad) and Hamish Playfair (men’s sculling reserve), will meet at Penrith for a training camp from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon.

Sacre (B. Arts), Cunningham-Reid (B. Science), Belonogoff (B. Applied Science {Exercise & Sport Science}), Edwards (M. Commerce) and Hargreaves are all part of the SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship program. Wheatley, de Carvalho and Playfair are all former EAP scholarship holders.

Many of these athletes, along with the Great Britain Rowing team will meet at The Grandstand Bar at the University of Sydney tonight (Thursday) to welcome the British Rowing Team. Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) and SUBC are hosting all 46 members of the British Rowing Team (including nine Olympians) for the World Cup on campus 6-9th March. They will be using the Arena Gym during their stay.

In other rowing news, last weekend the New South Wales King’s Cup crew for 2013 assembled in Sydney for their fifth and final training camp before the Interstate Regatta. The crew, which includes six SUBC members, will be seeking to create a new record for New South Wales on March 23 as they chase their sixth consecutive win. SUBC’s Toby Lister will cox the crew with fellow club members Fergus Pragnell, Frank Hegerty, Sam Loch, Nick Purnell and Matt Ryan. Joining them in the boat will be Spencer Turrin and James Chapman from Sydney Rowing Club and stroke Dan Noonan of Mosman. The crew will be coached by SUBC’s Mark Prater, and Nick Garratt from the Mosman Rowing Club.
