Sydney Uni Swimming Club’s (SUSC) Nathaniel Romeo has been crowned Australia’s best men’s 50m butterfly swimmer after winning gold on day two at the  Australian Swimming Championships overnight (Wednesday).

The SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder (Bachelor of Health Science) swam a personal best (23.82) in the semi-final to qualify for the final with the fastest time. He then recorded a time of 23.83 to hold off 15-year old Kyle Chalmers in the final.

The 50m butterfly is not a Commonwealth Games event, but Romeo will have his opportunity to qualify for Glasgow when he competes in the 100m butterfly preliminary race on Friday.

Also competing in finals overnight were SUSC representatives Melissa Mitchell (ninth in women’s 50m freestyle semi-final), Hayley White (seventh in women’s 100m backstroke), Nicole Mee (seventh in women’s 100m butterfly) and Kazimiri Boskovic (eighth in the men’s 400m IM).
