Former SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Astrid Radjenovic (Loch-Wilkinson) is on track for a third Winter Olympics berth after putting in another strong performance alongside teammate Jana Pittman in the women’s bobsleigh event at the Skeleton and Bobsleigh World Cup.
Held in St Moritz, Switzerland, the World Cup is one of the last tournaments held before the Australian Winter Olympic Games team is chosen for the February 7-23 Games in Sochi, Russia.
Radjenovic and Pittman finished in 12th place in the women’s bobsleigh, just 1.07 seconds behind the eventual winners.
Radjenovic, who finished 19th at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and 14th at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, is an incredibly talented athlete across a number of sports. While training and competing in track and field (400m sprint and 400m hurdles), Radjenovic was asked to trial for the new women’s bobsleigh development team. Originally slated to be a brakewoman, she took up driving to become the Australian women’s number one pilot.
In addition to bobsleigh and athletics, Radjenovic competed in state and super league soccer for NSW and won a bronze medal in the 2006 National Weightlifting titles, competing in the 69kg division.
Radjenovic is hopeful of joining fellow former SUSF EAP scholarship holder Danielle O’Brien at this year’s 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
O’Brien and competition partner Greg Merriman confirmed their selection in their first Winter Olympics after finishing sixth in their free dance at the Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany in November.
Current SUSF EAP scholarship holders Lavinia Chrystal, Charlie Timmins and James Matheson are also attempting to qualify for Sochi.
