Sydney University’s Susan Pratley found the hoop with 89 per cent accuracy as the NSW Swifts defeated the Mecury Energy Canterbury Tactix 62-45 in their 2009 ANZ Netball Championship season opener played at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on Monday night.
Pratley shot 17 from 19 before being given an early mark by Swifts coach Julie Fitzgerald, who brought on newcomers Sam May and Erin Bell for a taste of championship netball.
Taking an early lead in the opening quarter, the Swifts scored four in a row to give them the advantage early on against the only New Zealand team to record a win against them in last year’s ANZ Championship.
The Swifts ran up a nine-goal lead at the first break and dominated the second quarter despite some changes to the Tactix defensive end.
Showing the form that won them the ANZ Championship the previous year, the Swifts shooting duo of Catherine Cox and Pratley was unstoppable and they led by 13 going into the second half.
With Pratley and Kim Smith rested after the main break, the match tightened up and became more physical in the final quarter, with the hosts finishing too strong.
The Swifts will meet Adelaide Thunderbirds at ETSA Park Stadium in Adelaide at 2pm on Sunday.
