After a week off, the Sydney Uni girls were keen to get back on the field and take on Waverley. Despite a disrupted warm up, the first 15 minutes of the game were played mainly in Waverley’s half which in turn placed a lot of pressure on the opposition and Grace Hamilton soon powered over the line for a great try. Despite some good ball movement by Waverley, the opposition was unable to penetrate the Students’ defence. The Uni girls led by Gaelle Marcassus continued to dominate the gain line. Both Sera Naiqama and Haruka Takahasi dominated the line outs whilst Kim Davey was able to straighten the attack with some strong running lines which soon led to another two tries by Lope Leiataua and Ash Hewson.

The halftime score of 21-0 was starting to frustrate Uni as the team probably should have been further in front. Determined to play some running rugby with structure and good decision making, the 2nd half was very pleasing as the Students began to show some great offloads, solid scrums and line outs and almost every time Uni was attacking they threatened the defence with many options and both Lope and Ash took full advantage by scoring some great team tries. Amy in her first full game at fullback was able to score a great individual try for the girls to reach 54 points on the day.

Coach Phil Brown said he was most impressed with the team’s structure and defence which continues to improve each week.

The action moves to St John’s Oval Saturday June 20th, when Sydney University host Blacktown Scorpions at 2pm.

Full Time score: Sydney University 54 (Grace Hamilton, Ash Hewson 3,  Lope Leiataua 2, Eloise Vunakece, Amy Foo tries, Ash Hewson 7 goals) d Waverley 0 at Waverley Oval.
