Sydney University openers Will Hay and Ben Larkin have the job ahead of them next Saturday in the chase to overhaul the imposing 286 posted by UNSW on the first day of the two-day Sydney Grade Cricket fixture at Sydney University No.1 Oval.
The Students went to stumps on day one at 0-37, with Hay passing 500 runs for the season on his way to 28, while Larkin played patiently for seven as the pair negotiated a torrid 10 overs in the final 45 minutes.
Earlier, NSW representative Mark Cameron finished with 5-59 from 21 overs as Sydney University tried to stifle the UNSW run-flow which was headed by 76 from number three Murray Creed and good contributions from Mitchell Gowland (42), Tim Lang (38), Richard Nikolovski (37) and Ross Lyons (37).
While claiming first innings points is the first priority, a win from the First XI would also greatly assist Sydney University’s push to regain the Club Championship lead.
With all lower grades in strong positions or having already secured first innings points, the Students (on 942 points) are within striking distance of hauling on Campbelltown-Camden, who head the table on 983 points.
