A century from Sydney University opener Greg Mail was not enough to stop North Sydney securing a first innings win over the Students in their round nine clash at North Sydney Oval at the weekend.
Mail scored 100 – his fourth century of the season, including back-to-back double centuries – in Sydney University’s total of 222 in reply to the host’s 233.
The Students loss 9-135 after Mail and Will Hay (28) had put on an 87-run opening partnership, with Robert Aitken (3-19) and Dwayne Smith (3-99) the main destroyers.
Having won the toss and batted, North Sydney’s total was helped by Tim Affleck (60), Joshua Kentwell (60), Ardil Domingo (32) and Nathan Glynn (30), while Marty Paskal was the pick of the Sydney University bowling attack, with 5-24.
The loss sees Sydney University drop to fourth on the competition ladder on 40 points, behind Sutherland (57), Eastern Suburbs (45) and Manly-Warringah (41).
The club has also dropped to fifth on the Club Championship ladder on 849 points, behind Bankstown (960), St George (945), Sutherland (935) and Eastern Suburbs (876).
