A strong third quarter provided the impetus for City of Sydney-Sydney University to win the Division Five 2013 Dooleys State League netball title, with a 43-34 result over Hills District at the Anne Clark Centre, Lidcombe, on Monday night.

CSNA-Sydney University shooters Leilani Soli (3/3), Tomaya Kelly-Sines (21/34) and Jessica Gale (19/24) provided a team shooting average of 70 per cent from 61 shots to edge out Hills District’s Katie Schollz (18/30) and Natalie Eldridge (16/26), who averaged 61 per cent from 56 shots.

In typical grand final mode, the first 15 minutes was a goal-for-goal affair, with the combatants going to the first break at eight goals apiece.

Hills District opened up a three-goal lead early in the second quarter on the back of their speed through the midcourt, but CSNA-Sydney University retaliated mid-way through the quarter and finished stronger to go to the main break with an 18-16 lead.

And it was in the business section – the third quarter – that they established their superiority, moving the ball quickly while their shooters had their eye in with accurate shooting under the post. Hills District pushed hard to win back possession and close the gap, but the closest they could get was within three goals as CSNA-Sydney University were composed under the pressure.  Enjoying a strong finish to the third quarter, CSNA-Sydney University pushed their advantage to five goals at the final break, leading Hills District 30-25.

They continued the roll in the early stages of the final quarter, moving the ball quickly to their mobile shooters who soon had pushed out their lead to eight goals.

Hills District dug deep with players throwing everything into the contest to win possession. But City of Sydney held their composure to finish nine goal victors and be crowned the 2013 champions.
