Sydney University graduates Peter Montgomery and Debbie Watson were amongst 9 athletes who were inducted into the Australian Water Polo Inc. ‘Hall of Fame’ at the inaugural AWPI ‘Hall of Fame’ dinner held at the Novotel, Sydney Olympic Park.

With four Olympics, four World Championships, a World Cup, and a total of 510 international matches under his belt, Peter Montgomery’s name is inextricably linked with water polo.

Montogmery was president of the Sydney Uni Water polo Club and Sydney Uni Swim Club whilst he studied Law at Sydney University from 1968 to 1971, and was awarded Blues for both sports. The Sydney Uni Sports and Aquatic Centre Pool, opened in 1997, was named in his honour.

Watson played a record 315 international water polo games for Australia and is the only player in history to win Olympic, World Championship and World Cup gold medals.

Watson still plays a part in the Sydney Uni Women’s Water polo club alongside former team mate Yvette Higgins.

Johnno Cotterill, who emerged from obscurity at Sydney University Lions, was named junior male athlete of the year at the dinner.

He currently plays for Sant Andreu in the Spanish league and captained Australia to the Long Beach junior world championships, being named to the all-star team.
