Olympic diver and SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Matthew Mitcham will spearhead a 12-strong Australian diving team at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this year.

Mitcham will take on the best in the Commonwealth in the springboard synchronised after he placed first in the 3m and 10m synchronised events and second in the 10m individual platform at the Commonwealth Games selection trials in Melbourne last week.

The Bachelor of Arts and Sciences student won gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in the 10m platform event, after he received the highest single-dive score in Olympic history. Mitcham became the first Australian male to win an Olympic gold medal in diving since Dick Eve at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Mitcham won four silver medals. He placed 13th in the semi-finals of the 10m event at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, narrowly missing the mark to qualify for the finals.

Mitcham will join fellow Sydney University athletes Ian Dewhurst, Josh Ralph, Nick Hough, Ella Nelson, Angie Ballard, Em Brichacek (athletics) and Kane Townsend (table tennis) at the Commonwealth Games.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, over 11 days of competition from 23 July to 3 August 2014.
