Sydney University finished 6th overall in the 2008-09 National Men’s Water Polo League after losing 9-8 to the Victorian Tigers in their play-off. Fremantle Mariners won the title medal with a 7-6 result over Drummoyne Devils in the gold medal match.
With the top six in the finals series being split into two groups of three, Sydney University (6th on the ladder) met the Victorian Tigers (1st) and came away with an 8-all draw.
They then met Fremantle Mariners (4th) but lost 13-12, relegating them to a qualifying final between Group B2 (Balmain) and GroupA3 (Sydney University).
Balmain Tigers triumphed 13-10, relegating the Students to a play-off for 5th and 6th.
During the finals series Sydney University’s Alistair Visch set a new benchmark in the match against Fremantle Mariners when he played his 320th NWPL game – a remarkable achievement.
His Sydney University team-mate Trent Franklin also brought up a milestone during the finals series when he played his 300th NWPL match and took his career goal tally to 584.
