Mail took 5-16 off 10 overs as Manly were dismissed for 198 after winning the toss and batting.
After losing the early wicket of opener Justin Cox with 20 on the board, Tim Cruikshank (65) and Andrew Jeffrey (56) consolidated with a 111-run partnership before Mail entered the fray and the hosts lost 7-77.
Will Hay (29 not out) and Mail (18 not out) took the Students to 0-48 at stumps on day one, with the prospect of first innings points looking bright next Saturday.
Mail is in great early season form having scored 52 in the first innings of a drawn mid-week match between NSW and Victoria Second XIs and backed that up with 223 in the second innings.
