Sydney University’s women’s water polo team scored a convincing 14-7 win over arch-rivals UNSW-Wests in an L1 second round match at Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre (SUSAC) on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions started slowly and found themselves down 3-0 in as many minutes thanks to some poor defence and a lack of attention to the new FINA rules.
This resulted in coach Ian Trent stopping the rot with a time-out and Sydney Uni responded with the next four goals to issue a stern warning to the visitors.
From then on it was all the Lions with newcomer Sarah Harris starting her Sydney University career with an impressive five goals. Centre forward and SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Gi Clark (Bachelor of Occupational Therapy) knocked home four goals from the two metre line, whilst Australian Stinger and fellow SUSF EAP scholarship holder Hannah Buckling (Bachelor of Science) was lethal from the outside with three goals. Bec Curtis added two to complete the rout.
Australian representative Keesja Gofers was missing from the line-up, as were Gabby Wikman and Emma Lewis, making the victory all the more meritorious.
The Lions have a Wednesday night meeting coming up this week with the Cronulla Sharks at 7.30pm at SUSAC, and also a Saturday date with the Balmain Tigers at 1.00pm, also at home.
