Following their bronze medal finish at the National Water Polo League (NWPL) Finals, two Sydney Uni women’s water polo players have been named in the Australian Stingers team to contest the 2014 FINA World League Rounds in California.

Lions captain Keesja Gofers and left-hander Isobel Bishop are in the Stingers line-up. Gofers is a former SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder, while Bishop is a current scholarship holder.

Stingers Head Coach, Greg McFaddon said, “The players have been selected to represent Australia in the first major competition of the 2014 international season based on their strong performances in the NWPL this season. Seven players from the silver medal winning World Championship team have been selected, while the other six players from that triumph are unavailable due to injuries or other commitments.”

Injured Lions who were unavailable for the trip includes goalkeeper Lea Yanitsas (broken finger), centre back Hannah Buckling (shoulder) and Sarah Harris (knee).

The team departed last Saturday for the FINA World League Rounds in California and return on May 27. The squad for the FINA World League Finals will be announced on May 28, with that team to depart for Kunshan, China on June 3.

The FINA World League Finals are from June 10-15, with the Stingers main target this year the FINA World Cup in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia from August 12-17.

Meantime the Lions top scorer in the NWPL Finals Series, 18 year old Bronte Halligan has been named in the Australian team to contest the 2014 FINA World Youth Championships in Madrid in Spain.

For Halligan, it will be her second World Championship appearance, after representing Australia at the FINA World Junior Championships last year in Greece.

The team will participate in an eight-nation tournament in Hungary from August 19-21. From there the girls will fly to Madrid for the World titles from August 25-31.

Not to be left in the shadows, 17 year old left-hander Kristy Donkin has been selected in the 21 player Australian Born ’95 Squad. After a three-day training camp in Adelaide from July 5-7 and the 20 & Under Championships to be staged from July 8-13 the squad will be reduced to 15 for a European tour beginning on August 1, with stops in Hungary and Slovakia, before the girls arrive home on August 23.
