Sydney University Lions head the men’s and women’s ladders with two rounds of the competition proper remaining in the 2019-20 Australian Water Polo League competitions.

The Sydneysiders travelled to Brisbane for Round 6 games against Queensland Thunder and completed a clean-sweep at the  Fortitude Valley Pool in double-headers on Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon.

Johnno Cotterill led the scoring with four goals in the men’s 16-6 win over the Thunder on Thursday. George Ford planted three and Chris Dyson and Goran Tomasevic bagged doubles, while Sam Lenarduzzi posted a pair for the hosts.

The Lions backed up on Saturday with a 14-8 result, with Thomas Kearns scoring three and Caleb Millin, Johnno Cotterill, Tom McJannett, Chris Dyson and George Ford each scoring doubles.

Sydney Uni women’s side remain unbeaten with 14 on the trot after their two wins over the Thunder.

Matilda Kearns led the scoring with four goals in the 11-9 win on Thursday. Hannah Buckling posted three and Danielle Morrissey and Isobel Bishop scored doubles, while Charlize Andrews scored a treble for the hosts.

The Saturday afternoon match was a much tighter affair, with the Lions getting home 6-4 to keep their streak alive. They head the ladder on 56 points, with Queensland Thunder (39), UTS Balmain Tigers (36) and Fremantle Marlins (35) making up the top four.

The Lions will host Adelaide Jets in double headers at the Peter Montgomery Pool, Sydney Uni Sports and Fitness Centre this Saturday and Sunday. The women’s games will start at 2pm each day, followed by the men’s games.

Women: Sydney Uni Lions 11 (Matilda Kearns 4, Hannah Buckling 3, Danielle Morrissey 2, Isobel Bishop 2) defeated Queensland Thunder 9 (Charlize Andrews 3, Jessica Emerson 2, Abbey Andrews 2, Late Blew, Tanealle Fasala) at Fortitude Valley Pool on Saturday.

 

Sydney Uni Lions 6 (Danielle Morrissey 2, Hannah Buckling 2, Isobel Bishop, Mia Willows) defeated Queensland Thunder 4 (Kate Blew, Bronwen Knox, Charlize Andrews, Tanealle Fasala) at Fortitude Valley Pool on Sunday.
