The Sydney Uni Women’s Water Polo Club (SUWWPC) charged home with a 3-0 last quarter blitz against the Cronulla Sharks to take out the final of the inaugural Play By The Bay pre-season tournament at Gunnamatta Bay over the weekend.

Trailing by two goals at three-quarter time and not inspiring any confidence in their supporters, the Lions roared home to edge out the home team 6-5, the winner coming with just five seconds remaining in regulation time.

Following a time out, the Lions brilliantly converted a set play with Keesja Gofers nailing a super score from a nice screen set by Gabby Wikman for the winner.

The final period was in stark contrast to the rest of the game where the Lions play was littered with missed chances and poor passing in the difficult conditions. However when under pressure in the final term, the Sydney Uni girls really stood up with some stern defence and spectacular scoring plays.

Gofers top scored with three strikes whilst Wikman, Sarah Harris and Isobel Bishop hit one goal each for the winners.

The tournament was a great success with all five Sydney National League clubs plus the Hunter Hurricanes and the Australian juniors competing, and gave a good grounding for the upcoming season which starts in early February.

It was a great double for Sydney Uni with the Men’s National League team beating Wests in a shootout to win their final.
