The Sydney Uni Women’s Water Polo team suffered through a frustrating weekend double header against fellow National League finals aspirants the UWA Torpedoes.

In the opening game UWA sprinted out to a 3-1 quarter time lead only to be pegged back by the Lions who trailed 6-5 at half-time. Sydney Uni played controlled water polo in the second half to lead 9-8 with 45 seconds remaining, only to concede a goal at the death to leave the game at 9-9 and take the contest into a penalty shootout – incredibly for the Lions it was the sixth of the season. Cruelly for the home team the UWA shooters were more on target for a 13-12 victory.

Not for the first time this season the Lions failed to back up positively for the second game of a series after losing the first game which they had every chance to win. Sydney Uni missed numerous chances, and after playing catch-up in the second half the score blew out to 14-6.

The double blow all but ends Sydney Uni’s finals chances. With two games remaining the Lions need to win both and then rely on other results to go their way. They play Balmain in a real grudge match at home on Thursday at 6.30pm before taking on Hunter at Sydney Uni on Sunday at 6.00pm.
