Striker Liam McConaghy slotted all four goals as Sydney University wrapped up their Superleague soccer pre-season commitments with a 4-2 win over UNSW to win the Kennard Cup for 2011.

Over 200 spectators attended the match played under the newly-installed lights on the Sydney University Square.

McConaghy starred in an entertaining contest as Sydney University backed up a hard mid-week game against the Leichhardt Tigers.

After setting up an early 2-nil lead, McConaghy’s third goal – midway through the first half – came from great combination work with crowd favourite, Frenchman Gerard Ouffoue. And it looked to have put the game beyond UNSW.

But the visitors managed to score a confidence-boosting goal just on half-time after a defensive lapse from the home team.

Sydney University made several half-time changes to the line-up to freshen up the team, but an early defensive blunder saw UNSW score a second to keep them in touch.

However, a great build-up from Sydney University resulted in McConaghy scoring his fourth to put the result beyond doubt and the Kennard Cup in safe-keeping at Darlington.

The match was a confidence booster for the men’s Superleague squads, with the first competition round less than two weeks away.

Earlier in the evening, Sydney University Under 20s started the night in great fashion taking out the Colosi Cup with a 5-1 win over UNSW.
