Sydney University Swimming Club junior competitor Angelique Barrett broke the NSW Allcomers 12 years 50m butterfly record at the recent Combined Independent Schools (CIS) swimming meet.

Barrett set a blistering time of 29.89 to progress through to the all schools final were she finished in 30.10sec.

Barrett’s Allcomers record time qualified her to swim at the Olympic trials to be held in March 2012.

SUSC coach Vanessa Smith says it is an amazing achievement at such a young age. “It is attributed to the hard work Angelique has put in over the past six months,” she said.

Another SUSC junior, 11-year-old Lewis Blackburn, finished with a bronze medal at the CIS primary meet in the 50m backstroke in a personal best time of 35.76sec, which was also a club record.

Blackburn will now represent NSW at School Nationals to be held in July.

Other Sydney University swimmers who swam at NSW All Schools and PSSA were Paige Burland in the 5m0 backstroke, Huon Fairbairn in the 200m butterfly, Cecilia Mafi (relay) and Imogen Brent.
