Sydney University Athletics Club athletes had a phenomenal night at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast on Tuesday, claiming a silver and bronze medal; setting two club records as well as two personal bests.
Nick Hough produced his finest ever performance at international level to take the bronze medal in a personal best performance, club record and 2nd fastest time ever by an Australian. The time of 13.38 is only 9/100ths outside the Australian record.
The field was full of quality athletes, including Jamacia’s Ronald Levy and Hansle Parchment who claimed first and second to take gold and silver, respectively.
Hough evidently produces at the big meets having won medals previously at the World Juniors and World Youth Championships.
Angie Ballard took home the silver medal in the T54 1500m with a time of 3:36.85, unleashing a devastating finish with 150m to go to move from 4th to 2nd. Ballard adds the silver to the gold medal she won in Glasgow.
Australia’s Madison de Rozario took gold in the event.
In the women’s 400m semi-final, Anneliese Rubie ran the race of her life to progress to the final. Rubie clocked a personal best and club record of 51.51 to book her spot in tonight’s final.
Amazingly, with less than 20 per cent of athletes producing personal best times in major international meets, Rubie was able to produce a personal best performance in the pouring rain.
Director of Athletics at Sydney University, Dean Gleeson said it was “one of the best nights at an international meet in Sydney University Athletics Club history.”
