The University of Sydney proudly awards an Honorary Fellowship to Robert Smithies, recognising his extraordinary and enduring contribution to student sport, wellbeing, and community through his leadership of Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness (SUSF).

A graduate of the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Smithies also holds a Bachelor of Science from Marquette University in the United States, where he studied on a four-year soccer scholarship. It was there, immersed in the US collegiate system, that he saw firsthand the power of combining sports and study to shape young lives. This belief became the cornerstone of his nearly three decades of service to student sport in Australia.

Joining SUSF in 2004, first as operations manager and then as executive director, Smithies led the organisation for 12 years. Over the period, he managed more than 85 staff, oversaw an annual operating budget of $15 million alongside $7 million in club funds, and secured surpluses in 10 of his 12 years.

His leadership was marked by growth, innovation, and impact. Student membership increased by 40%, while gym and pool attendances more than doubled. Additionally, membership fees were reduced by 28% to make access more affordable. At the same time, commercial revenue almost doubled, from $4 million to $7.5 million annually, allowing for greater reinvestment in student programs, scholarships, and services.

One of Smithies’ most notable achievements is the transformation of the campus’s sporting infrastructure. He oversaw more than $40 million in new development, including the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre extension, the TAG Family Foundations Grandstand, the Thyne Reid Boathouse, and the Bruce Pryor Hockey Field.

These projects were not only a testament to his vision but also to his determination; through his leadership and personal commitment to fundraising, more than $13 million in philanthropic support was raised to bring them to life. Today, these world-class facilities stand as a lasting gift to generations of students.

Smithies’ vision went well beyond elite performances. He established and grew SUSF’s Programs & Participation Department, which created new pathways for more than 15,000 students each year to participate in sports, recreation, and wellbeing programs. From intramural competitions to water safety and wellness initiatives, these programs have helped embed physical activity into the heart of student experience.

Alongside his administrative achievements, Smithies was a distinguished athlete. He was the University’s first soccer scholarship recipient and later a University Blue. He captained Sydney Uni Soccer Football Club to three grand final victories, and his record of 205 goals in 212 games, earning him the NSW Super League Player of the Year in 2004, cements his legacy on the field as well as off it.

Robert Smithies’ contribution to student life at the University of Sydney has been nothing short of transformative. His leadership, vision for inclusivity, and lifelong commitment to sport have created opportunities for thousands of students to thrive, whether as elite athletes or as members of a vibrant sporting community.

On behalf of everyone from Sydney University Sport, we would like to congratulate Rob Smithies on being awarded an Honorary Fellowship.
