Sydney University Cricket Club (SUCC) representative Scott Henry has scored a half-century on his limited overs debut, as the NSW SpeedBlitz Blues defeated the Western Warriors in the season opening Ryobi Cup match at the WACA on Sunday.

The SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder played a crucial role at the top of the innings with a gritty 66 against an on-song Mitchell Johnson, as NSW posted a 27 run victory.

Having lost Brad Haddin, Nick Maddinson and Australian captain Michael Clarke early, New South Wales were left struggling at 3 for 69 in the 22nd over. But opening batsman Henry (66) and all-rounder Steve Smith (99 not out) rescued the Blues, who posted 5 for 281 from their allotted 50 overs.

The Warriors run chase never got going, losing wickets early to be eventually bowled out for 254 with two balls remaining in their innings. Fellow SUCC representative Sean Abbott (1 for 35 from 6 overs) secured the vital wicket of Warriors captain Marcus North for 18.

Henry will now quickly shift his attention to New South Wales’s Sheffield Shield first round match on September 18-21, while Abbott will head back to Sydney.
