Sydney University Women’s Rugby Club (SUWRC) has gone-to-back at the Crescent Head 7s Tournament, after defeating Newcastle University in the grand final on Saturday afternoon.

Sydney University defeated Newcastle University 10-7. The victory was the second time in a row that Sydney University had defeated Newcastle University in the Crescent Head 7s Tournament grand final.

Sydney University’s victory came in the midst of plenty of controversy. Trailing 7-5 with fewer than three minutes on the clock, Sydney University’s Clare Illsley ran more than 50 metres after making a break, only to lose possession of the ball over the line. With time running out – thanks largely to an ensuing scuffle and attempts by their opponents to waste time – Sydney University won the ball back from a Newcastle scrum after the siren, and when Wellie Clark dived over to score Sydney University had made the greatest of escapes.

Earlier in the day Sydney University demolished Lake Macquarie 37-5 in their first hit out of the Tournament. As the day progressed injuries shortened ensuing games and Sydney University’s second pool game of the day saw them lose to Newcastle University 7-5.

Despite the loss, Sydney University bounced back in the semi-final to defeat the Sunshine Coast 15-5.
