The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames fell to ladder leaders Townsville Fire on Saturday afternoon 86 -93, in their last home game before the New Year.

Leading at quarter time, the Flames got off to a strong start, however a weaker second quarter saw the Fire take control of the pace of the game, Townsville outscoring Sydney by ten points to take the lead at half time by eight.

It was a highly entertaining match with both teams shooting at around fifty per cent from the field and even higher from the three point line. The battle was won in the paint however, with Townsville scoring 48 of their points here and beating the Flames in the rebound contest by 13.

True to their form this season both Cayla Francis and Suzy Batkovic combined in an impressive offensive display which saw them collect 43 points between them. With the experience of Rohanee Cox missing, the Flames struggled to match against these two powerhouses who were also strong on the glass pulling down 14 and 10 rebounds respectively.

For the Flames it was Katie Ebzery and Leilani Mitchell in the back court that lead by example contributing in their points and assists. Ebzery ended the game with 18 points, while Mitchell scored 11, and tallied 8 assists, 4 steals. Mikaela Ruef has also continued her good form collecting 16 points and 7 rebounds.

The Flames now sit fourth on the ladder after a couple of tough matches against quality sides. They will face Bendigo again this weekend away, before enjoying a small Christmas break which will see them regroup and rest some bodies. January should see the return of Rohanee Cox who has been sidelined for several games due to a broken nose. This will reinject some experience and scoring power back into the side.
