Southern Design Sydney Uni Flames have secured the signature of one of the WNBL’s premier shooters with the addition of Lauren King to the roster.

A dual World University Games medallist, King will link with the Flames for the 2011-12 WNBL season after completing commitments with the Bendigo Braves in the SEABL.

Regarded as one of the premier three-point shooters in the league, the AIS graduate joins a potent Flames perimeter brigade with Alicia Poto, Katie Rae Ebzery and Natalie Stafford.

The sweet shooting guard/forward has represented Australia at the Under 19 level and holds the rare distinction of being one of the few players to be part of bronze and gold medal winning teams at the World University Games level.

A product of the Basketball NSW development pathway, King hails from northern NSW and the 2011-12 season heralds a return to her home state to continue her WNBL career.

In announcing the signing, Flames coach Karen Dalton said King’s versatility and shooting ability were the big pluses for Sydney.

“We struggled from the extended three-point line last year, so adding one of the league’s best perimeter shooters is a great bonus for our group,” Dalton said.

“Lauren has the ability to play multiple positions, has terrific experience in the league despite her youth and we see her as a key part of our plans for next season. Versatile players are a valuable commodity and this signing will hopefully provide us with the opportunity to show different looks and line-ups.”

King will join her new Flames team-mates in September after the SEABL season, where she is competing against Sydney University stars Amy Denson and Eva Afeaki.
