The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames are excited to announce the re-signing of 2014 Jayco Australian Opals squad member Katie-Rae Ebzery for the 2014/15 WNBL season.
Ebzery’s re-signing comes off the back of her best season in the WNBL – where she was jointly named last season’s Brydens Sydney Uni Flames MVP alongside Rohanee Cox. The dynamic guard played in each of the Flames 24 games and top scored with an average 15.9 points a game. That scoring average put her in equal fifth position in the league. Ebzery was rewarded for her superb form with a call-up to the 33-player – and then 20-player – Jayco Opals FIBA World Championship squad, before narrowly missing out on the trip to the USA.
Despite being just 24-years of age, the Newcastle product has already played an incredible eight seasons and 174 games in the WNBL.
Ebzery is the fifth player to commit her future to the club after the Flames recently re-signed former WNBL MVP and Australian Opals player Rohanee Cox, WNBL veteran Lauren King, 2013/14 Flames Most Improved Player Casey Samuels and boom youngster Tahlia Tupaea.
“I wanted to re-sign with the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames for another season because I felt like we made some significant inroads last season in terms of building a good base for the future,” explained Ebzery.
“We have some really great young players and I wanted to continue to be a part of that progression. I’m really looking forward to the team building on last years efforts and hopefully we can continue to be more of a finals contending team!”
Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) High Performance Manager, Matthew Phelps was pleased to re-sign one of the league’s premier players.
“Re-signing Katie is great news for the Flames,” said Phelps.
“She had her best season for the Flames last season and deserved her place in the Opals squad. We intend to build our program over the coming years around Katie. Her basketball ability is unquestioned, she studies at the University and she is starting to come of age as a real leader of the Flames. We are extremely thrilled to retain her services.”
