The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames are aiming to farewell their fans with a season ending victory this Saturday, when the Flames take on the Waves in the Indigenous Excellence Game at Brydens Stadium.
Up against the Waves in the final round of the Wattle Valley WNBL, Flames guard Katie-Rae Ebzery assured Flames fans the team was desperate to sign off on the 2013/14 season with another win.
“It’s really important for us to win again this Saturday,” said Ebzery. “Especially after we played really well on Friday night (in the loss to Townsville) and then we got the win in Logan a couple of days later.”
We’ve made some inroads in the second half of this season, especially defensively. So we are desperate to finish the season on a good note and build into next season.”
Following on from a weekend in which the Jayco Australian Opals representative amassed 46 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds against the Fire and Thunder, Ebzery was quick to shy away from her own performances, instead focusing on the team effort it took to defeat the Thunder by 17 points.
“Defensively we forced them into taking difficult shots, which helped our cause,” explained Ebzery. “We were able to run on them when they were missing shots and we started making some down the other end and that gave us a bit of a buffer in that last quarter, which helped us to get the win.”
We had a lot of contributors it was an especially good win on Sunday, given we were missing Rohanee Cox (through injury).”
One of those contributors was fellow guard Jaimee Kennedy who clocked up her 150th WNBL game against Logan.
“Jaimee is a hard worker and a very tough competitor,” explained Ebzery, who first played with Kennedy at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in 2006.
“She’s often undersized against people she’s playing on, but never gives up. She’s the ideal teammate to have. She’s a great person and a great player.”
Convinced that complacency won’t be an issue against the bottom placed Waves outfit On Sunday, Ebzery finished by saying “It’s the last game of the season, so there’s no excuse for us to not give it our all and really take it to West Coast.”
The Flames Indigenous Excellence Game against the West Coast Waves will tip off at 5pm on Saturday.
