The Southern Design Sydney Uni Flames have fallen just short of a remarkable comeback following a see-sawing battle against the Canberra Capitals at the AIS Arena on Friday night.

The Flames 60-56 loss to the Capitals, came on the back of another slow start that saw the girls down by 12 points mid-way through the second quarter, as Canberra’s Brigitte Ardossi pilled on 12 first half points. That’s where the fight back began as the Flames narrowed the margin to just 5 points (32-27) at the main break.

WNBA star April Sykes (15 points) and point guard Alicia Poto (12) led the fight-back, as the Flames hit the lead early in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately they were unable to hang on, with Michaela Dombkins (14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks) and Ardossi (22 points, 14 rebounds) contributing at key moments to virtually carry the hosts to a third straight home victory.

The Flames will have a chance to bounce back this weekend against the table topping Adelaide Lightning at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre (SUSAC) on Saturday night on ‘Association Day’. Tip-off is at 7pm.
