The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames narrowly lost to the Adelaide Lightening in a nail biter on Saturday night.
The Flames, who played their first game in front of a home crowd, were ahead the entire match before Adelaide tied the game up in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter sending the match into overtime.
Despite a couple of big plays from both teams, it was former Flame Kathleen Scheer who pulled down a pivotal offensive rebound with 13 seconds to go which resulted in a foul and two made free throws that sealed the game for the visiting team.
The Flames led by as many as six points with one minute to go in regular time; however some clutch plays by veteran Jessica Foley kept Adelaide in the match and allowed the side to claw their way back.
The Flames had four players reach double figures in points scored, this included Mitchell, Ruef, Ebzery and Johnson, demonstrating another strong team performance.
Leilani Mitchell was the standout of the Flames however with 30 points in 11 from 16 shooting, including 3 from 5 from three point range. She also accumulated 5 assists, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
For Adelaide it was the front court combination of Alex Bunton and Laura Hodges that dominated possession. Hodges finished the game with 26 points with an extremely efficient scoring percentage of 81.8%, she also pulled down 7 rebounds. Meanwhile Bunton secured a double double with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
Despite the loss the Flames remain third on the ladder and will face UC Canberra Capitals this Wednesday night where they will hope to secure another win from the side the played in round one.
The Flames will enter the game confident as Canberra is again without Lauren Jackson and they are now facing the team on their home court. Tipoff is at 7pm on Wednesday 5 November and its Student night with $5 tickets including a beverage on entry for all those with a valid student card.
