The Southern Design Sydney Uni Flames might have salvaged their season in addressing a three-game losing run with a 97-68 drubbing of Canberra Capitals at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre on Australia Day.

The win temporarily elevated the Flames to fifth on the Women’s National Basketball League ladder behind Adelaide, Bulleen, Townsville and Logan.

Having slipped to seventh after last weekend’s 0-2 Queensland road trip, the Flames shot 51 per cent from the field for the game, setting up their victory with a 30-21 first term, before closing the contest strongly to run away 29 point victors.

Belinda Snell led the way for the home side with 23 points and 11 assists, while Ellyce Ironmonger scored a season-high 18 points, hitting eight of her 13 field goal attempts.

Katie-Rae Ebzery and Lauren King added 13 points apiece for the Flames, who took their season record to 11-8.

The Canberra Capitals were led by Jess Bibby with 19 points, having connected on eight of her 12 field goal attempts, while Carly Wilson added 13 points and Marianna Tolo added 12 points.

In her 200th WNBL game, Canberra’s Michelle Cosier pulled in 10 rebounds and scored four points.

The Flames will be at home for two of their final three competition matches – against Dandenong on Friday, February 3 (7pm tip-off) and West Coast on Friday, February 17 (7pm), interspersed with an away match against Bendigo at Bendigo Stadium on Saturday, February 11 (7.30pm).
