Sydney University athletes have once again proven themselves on the global stage, playing a pivotal role in Australia’s most successful athletics campaign in World University Games history. At the 2025 FISU Summer Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, current students and alums from the University of Sydney delivered standout performances, helping Australia top the athletics medal table.

The headline act came from Connor Murphy, who soared to gold in the men’s triple jump. The Sydney Uni Athletes Club (SUAC) star and current Elite Athlete Program (EAP) student jumped a season’s best of 16.77m to claim top spot in a thrilling final. It was Australia’s first field event title of the meet and a defining moment for the UniRoos team.

Another strong result came in the men’s 4×100 relay, where two SUAC athletes were part of the team that narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth. Joseph Ayoade, a current USYD student, and Chris Ius, a Sydney Uni alumnus, contributed to a sharp semifinal performance that set up a competitive final run.

In the women’s 20km race walk, Allanah Pitcher, another EAP and SUAC athlete, finished 13th individually but played a crucial role in securing a team silver medal for Australia. Her performance highlighted both endurance and team strength in one of the sport’s most gruelling events.

Rounding out the top performance was Alexandra Harrison, who cleared 1.81m in the women’s high jump to place sixth overall. Harrison’s effort capped off a run of impressive top-eight finishes from Sydney Uni representatives.

These results underscore the strength of Sydney University’s sporting pathways, with all five athletes currently or previously part of the Elite Athlete Program and active members of SUAC. With sights now set on the upcoming Uni Nationals as well as Target LA in 2028.
