Day two at Eastern Uni Games (EUG) started with the teams picking up right from where they left off.
The men’s basketball team would not let anyone get in their way today. After day one’s triumphs, they managed another three impressive victories today to top their pool and sail straight into the quarter finals tomorrow. The three wins today were all double digit margin wins and the team is looking very solid going into tomorrow’s quarter final against OTU.
Due to the women’s basketball team suffering a controversial one point loss yesterday, everything was on the line in their final group game against UTS, as the loser of this game would be out of medal contention. Both teams came out to battle, neither wanting to go home without the silverware. There was nothing in it at the start, with only two points separating the teams going into half time. Sydney Uni showed why they were last year’s winning team and came out absolutely firing in the second half, shutting down UTS defensively and putting immense pressure up the other side. The scoreboard happily ticked over for the girls as they finished the game with a 45-21 win. The girls will face off against our neighbors at Cumberland tomorrow morning with the winner of that game moving on to the quarter finals.
The men’s touch teams have been dominant and are yet to lose a game thanks to the convincing pair of wins today. The men have two more pool games tomorrow before Thursday’s quarter finals and there is no doubt the team will want to finish their final pool games on a high and top their group leading into Thursday.
The women’s touch had another impressive day on the field proving too strong for both UWS and UTS. The girls have one more pool game tomorrow morning against MQU before they take on the quarter finals.
The women’s netball team are unstoppable here in Newcastle. They have won all five of their games and have breezed into tomorrow’s round of 16 clash against ICMS. The winner of that game will play in the quarter finals later in the day.
Ultimate frisbee mean business here in Newcastle, and the lunch time battle against the hosts proved to be the match of the day. Newcastle boasted a great line up, with National representatives and a very solid team. The Sydney University team however, were not one bit intimidated and came out strong. The momentum was with USYD from the start and they never let it slip. We ended up winning 15-9 in what was a great battle with the frisbee. The team must be commended for their team spirit. As spectators, you only hear positive comments coming from this team and their demeanor on and off the field is a great representation of the University of Sydney and SUSF. The team has two more round games tomorrow before the quarter finals on Thursday.
Futsal men and women had a successful day with the women winning both of their matches and the men splitting games. The men are in to the round of 16 tomorrow against ACPE. The winner of that game will move to the quarter finals in the afternoon. The women are in to the quarter finals and play against UNSW in the morning.
James and Ben, our only two surfers have had a successful day in the water. They came up against each other today in their second round and unfortunately neither moved on to the quarter finals tomorrow. Both James and Ben represented USYD extremely well in the AUC surfing competition and had a great time in the water.
Our lawn bowls teams continue to show great spirit and camaraderie on the rinks, with all three of our teams displaying some impressive bowling. Tomorrow is the last day of group rounds before semi-finals kick in on Thursday.
The men’s tennis draw boasts 50 competitors, two of which are Sydney Uni players. The draw has been unbelievably tough but Edward Selig had an impressive 8-5 win today to book his spot in tomorrow’s top 16 and is ready for the challenge.
