Sydney University’s Ellie Trueman played a key leadership role as co-captain of the Australian Women’s Futures Indoor Hockey team, helping guide the side to two strong victories on the final day of the Big Apple International Indoor tournament.
The futures first took to the indoor court in crossover action against St Joseph’s Black, producing a disciplined hockey performance built on structured defence and fast attacking transitions. Australia started strongly, moving the ball quickly through the middle and capitalising on their opportunities to establish a 3-0 lead early in the match.
St Jospeh’s fought back late with two goals to close the margin, putting pressure on the Australians in the final minutes. With Ellie helping organise the defensive structure and maintain composure on the indoor court, the futures absorbed the pressure and controlled possession in key moments to secure a hard earned 3-2 win.
The victory advanced Australia into the 5th/6th classification match against Greenwich FHC, where the Futures again started with intensity and purpose. Demonstrating strong indoor hockey fundamentals, quick passing, sharp movement off the ball and disciplined positioning, Australia quickly took control of the game and built an early advantage.
Maintaining their attacking pressure while staying organised defensively, the Futures dictated the pace of the match and continued to create scoring opportunities. Hitting the back of the net twice late in the contest, but Australia remained composed to close out a convincing 5-2 victory.
For Ellie, the tournament was a significant opportunity to represent Australia on the international indoor hockey stage while stepping into a leadership role as co-captain. Across the final day, the Futures displayed a resilient display ensuring they finished the tournament with confidence and valuable international experience.
