Sydney University maintained their place in the top 5 with a dominant performance over Campbelltown on Saturday winning 26.12.168 to 13.9.87 at Sydney Uni’s Oval #1. Sydney Uni Scholarship holder, Mark Egan had a field day kicking an outstanding 10 goals, as the Students took control from the opening bounce.
By quarter time, the Students had already established a match winning lead, before Campbelltown enjoyed their best passage of play kicking 6 goals in the second quarter to reduce the margin to 4 goals at half time. In a reversal of last week’s fortunes, Uni opened the floodgates after half time, and went on to record a very impressive victory.
Egan was not alone, and was well supported by fellow scholarship holders Ben Mankarious (St Pauls) and 19 year old Angus Scott. Scott, who contributed four goals, ten marks and three goal-assists, provided a direct route to goal so often missing this season, and has received the Round 16 nomination for Sydney AFL’s Rising Star. He is the third winner of the rising star for Uni this year following the earlier nominations of scholarship holders Brydon Coles and Nick Clark. Josh Leary continued his dominant form in the ruck and the defensive unit was solid again.
Confidence will be high in the Uni camp as they look ahead to two crucial fixtures over the next couple of weeks which will decide their finals fate. A challenging road match awaits this weekend, as they travel down the coast to take on powerhouse St George Crows at Olds Park from 1.40pm. This will be a warm up for what will no doubt be a thrilling end to the regular season, as the last finals place will be determined away to North Shore on the 23rd August (be at Gore Hill Oval at 2pm on the 23rd for this crucial match). Both teams are currently locked on points and no matter which way the results go this weekend a win to the Students in the final round will ensure a berth in the Elimination Final.
The Reserves can cement a finals berth with a win over St George while the Blues face ladder leader Pennant Hills at St Pauls at 10am. The Reds follow against arch rivals UNSW/Easts at midday, looking to finish off a great year strongly.
