Sydney University fast bowler Nick Dunford appreciated the conditions at Raby Oval, Campbelltown on Saturday, when he collected 6-23 as Campbelltown-Camden were dismissed for 118 in their Round 7 match.
Coming on at first change, the young Sydney University Sports Scholarship holder delivered 11.3 overs, with four maidens, in his afternoon of destruction that has set Sydney University in a strong position to gain valuable points.
A product of Newington College, Dunford has played all of his senior cricket at the University, where he is an economics graduate.
He was well supported by all-rounder Ian Moran, whose return to the trundling ranks following a back injury, resulted in 4-29 from 15 overs, including six maidens.
However, some of the good work was undone when the Students lost opener Nick Larking (3) and number three Will Hay (16) to be 2-52 at stumps on day one.
Greg Mail, back from the NSW opening ranks, was ominously 25 not out.
It was back to the picturesque delights of Sydney University No.1 Oval on Sunday for the seventh round of the limited overs competition.
But the home-ground turf held no favours for the Students, who lasted just 37 overs and were all out for 132 chasing the 9-212 set by Randwick-Petersham.
Only Will Hay (35) and Matthew Morgan (31) provided any real resistance as Peter Alevizos (3-44), James Byrne (2-6), Eddie Otto (2-13) and Rodney Stafford (2-24) enhanced their bowling statistics for the Randy-Petes.
The visitors established a solid base through opener Brett Jackson’s 85, but only Matthew Taylor (45) and Otto (20) capitalised as Ian Moran (3-31) and Nick Dunford (3-44) continued their good form from Saturday.
Each of the lower grade teams are in strong positions to grab first innings points when the two-day matches resume on Saturday.
Ben Larkin (50) and Marty Pascal (46 not out) helped Seconds to a total of 295; Tim Harrington (62) top-scored in Third’s total of 203; while Chris Dan could add to his figures of 4-36 when Campbelltown-Camden Fifths resume batting at 7-164.
