The Sydney Uni Women’s Water Polo team finished off its National League campaign with a draw and a win to round off the 2013 season.

With just a flicker of hope of finals qualification both teams went hammer and tongs in the Thursday night encounter against traditional rivals Balmain at Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre. The Lions had the early running but had to survive a ferocious final quarter comeback from the Tigers, before settling for an 11-11 shootout draw. Keesja Gofers scored four for the Lions, Jo Whitehorn three and Diana Romero two.

It was the Lions’ seventh drawn game of the season, which must be a record for both men and women in the National League. All drawn games result in a five player penalty shootout to decide games. Sydney Uni won just one of these shootouts, lost three and drew three. Goalkeeper Lea Barta cannot be blamed for any of the losses as she managed to stop at least one shot in each of the shootouts – an incredible performance.

The Lions only had to turn a couple of shootout results around and a finals place beckoned. Four of the Lions seven drawn games were against top six teams.

In the second game of the weekend Hunter visited Sydney Uni and were handed a 12-5 beating from the Lions. Whitehorn top scored with three, while Gofers and Gabby Wikman scored two apiece.
