Sydney University teams will be in the thick of the action in many of tomorrow’s Australian University Games (AUG’s) quarter-finals and semi-finals after a host of strong performances on Day 3.
Badminton (women), basketball (men and women), football (men and women), handball (mixed), hockey (men and women), tennis (men and women), touch (men and women), sailing (men and women) and water polo (men and women) will all be involved in finals action tomorrow. There are also numerous other team sports that are battling for finals spots on the same day.
The Sydney Uni Australian football team had a 31 point victory over QUT and will play off for a minor placing tomorrow after narrowly missing
out on a semi-final spot.
In badminton, the women’s team had another two impressive wins today. They have one further match tomorrow, before they play in the finals on
Friday. The men’s team suffered two losses.
The open baseball team played its most difficult opponent thus far today, defeating Griffith University 4-2. The boys play UQ tomorrow in a tough
semi-final match-up.
Despite suffering their first loss today, the women’s basketball team still topped their group and will play a quarter-final tomorrow. After
victory today, the men’s team will also be involved in quarter-final action.
Men’s and women’s football teams finished undefeated and topped their respective groups. Both teams play crunch semi-final’s tomorrow.
The mixed handball team are through to semi-final against ECU tomorrow after a 31-21 quarter-final victory over Murdoch University.
The women’s hockey team cruised through their quarter-final today, racking up a 12-1 score line. Tomorrow the girls play their semi-final. The men’s hockey team will come up against Melbourne in a tough semi-final match tomorrow, following an impressive 5-2 win today.
In netball, the women’s and mixed teams missed out on semi-final berths after some tough defeats today.
Despite two losses today, the women’s softball team will advance to a semi-final if they defeat last placed UTS tomorrow.
The men’s and women’s tennis teams once again swept all competition aside in a comfortable third day of action. Both teams will play
finals matches tomorrow.
The men’s and women’s touch teams face do or die group matches tomorrow after mixed results today. The men must defeat UTS, and the women must see off UWS, in order for both teams to progress to Friday’s semi-finals.
In mixed ultimate frisbee competition, Sydney Uni won one game and lost the other in today’s action.
The women’s volleyball team easily accounted for their opposition, sweeping aside UNSW and Curtain University comfortably to lock in a semi-final berth. The men’s team has also qualified for the finals.
In water polo, Sydney Uni men’s and women’s teams had comfortable victories. The men play Monash University, while the women will come against UTS, in semi-final games tomorrow.
The Sydney University sailing team will be involved in the finals tomorrow after they won eight of their team races today.
After the third round of the golf Sydney University teams are holding their own. The women’s team are in fourth place, while the men’s team are equal fifth.
It was another superb day for the Sydney University athletics team, who won a further six medals to maintain their first position. Sydney University Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Alix Kennedy got Uni off to a great start with gold in the women’s discuss. Fellow EAP scholarship holders Lachlan Chisholm and Hugh Williams took out the top two spots in the men’s 1500m. In the 400m Josh Ralph won silver, while the men’s (bronze) and women’s (silver) 4 x 400m relay teams claimed medals.
Sydney University swimmers came away with three medals on the second day of their competition. EAP scholarship holders Sam McConnell (silver – 50m butterfly), Mel Houghton (50m butterfly) and Emma Gray (bronze – 50m butterfly) all swum extremely well.
Our fencers secured a further three medals on day 3. John Downes won gold (men’s epee), the women’s epee team achieved silver and Will Childs secured bronze (novice foil).
