Christmas came early for Sydney University Cricket Club with a clean sweep over UNSW in the round of limited overs matches played on Saturday.

Nick Larkin (87) guided First Grade to a three-wicket win at Sydney University No.1 Oval, while David Miller (74 not out) and Will Hay (72) turned on some fireworks to help Seconds to a bonus point win at the Village Green.

Sydney University Firsts needed a modest 170 to claim the points after Tim Ley ripped through UNSW to claim 6-27 off seven overs as the visitors were routed for 169 off 48.4 overs.

Opener Larkin didn’t mess about in pursuit of victory, cracking eight boundaries and a six in his 95-ball stay.

But the Students lost wickets at the other end and were seven down before they reached the target. One of the early wickets was Ed Cowan (2), making a rare appearance for his alma mater. Having cracked four Sheffield Shield centuries in his past five games for Tasmania he was a valuable wicket for UNSW, falling to Ravi Patel, who finished with 3-24.

Having limited UNSW to 8-183 off their 50 overs, Sydney University Second Grade openers Miller and Hay put on a run-a-ball stand of 150 as the Students reached 2-184 off just 29.1 overs. The bonus point was welcome.

Jack Hill cracked an unbeaten 100 to help Thirds to a seven-wicket win at St Paul’s College Oval, while Alasdair Grant hit 111 not out to help Fourths to the points at David Phillips South Oval.

The clean sweep lifted SUCC to fourth on the Club Championship ladder on 550 points, behind Manly-Warringah (655), Eastern Suburbs (561) and Sutherland (552),

And capping off the big weekend for the club, Sydney University’s Metropolitan Cup side defeated Fairfield-Liverpool by 204 runs at Don Dawson Oval.

Cameron New blazed an unbeaten 170 in the visitor’s 4-263 off 50 overs before they dismissed the hosts for 59 off 26 overs.

The Sydney Grade competition will resume on January 10 when Sydney University take on Randwick-Petersham in another round of limited overs matches.
