Sydney University’s chances of a semi-final berth in the Sydney First Grade competition exited with their first innings Round 12 loss to UNSW at the Village Green on Saturday.

With three matches to be played to round out the season proper, the 17th placed Students would need two outright wins, maximum points from a one-dayer and plenty of stars to align to make the top six.

The two-day matches are against 18th placed Hawkesbury at No.1 Oval on February 20-21, and 2nd placed Penrith at Howell Oval on February 27 and March 5, with a 50-over game against 14th placed Fairfield-Liverpool at Rosedale Oval before the elimination finals begin.

UNSW dominated the two-day match at the Village Green after Sydney University won the toss and elected to bat.

They were all out for 165, thanks to some tight bowling from Jake Turner (3-42), Joshua Connolly (3-53) and Declan White (2-24). UNSW earned first innings points when they declared at 3-166, with Benjamin Wakim contributing 72 not out.

The match still held some interest when Sydney University declared their second innings closed at 4-186, on the back of Liam Robertson’s quickfire 84 not out and David Miller’s 70. Needing 186 for outright points, UNSW were 7-143 when stumps were drawn, with Tom Kierath (3-54) and Robertson (2-23) causing some anxious moments.
