Sutherland rained on Sydney University’s parade through the ranks on Saturday, with First, Second and Third grades suffering first innings losses, Fourth Grade fighting out a draw and Fifth Grade collected first innings points.

Sydney University had won the toss and batted in all grades and put themselves in solid positions at the end of day one of Round 3. But Sutherland turned up with occupation topping their agenda on day two and went home satisfied with a good day’s work.

Matthew Hughston led the way, guiding Sutherland First XI to a first innings win  with a great knock of 144 at Sydney University No.I Oval.

The visitors arrived chasing 303 – thanks to Nick Larkin (113), Sean Abbott (79), Mark Faraday (43) and Adam Theobald (32) – and went about their work with purpose, making the most of the Students’ attack being without Tom Keirath (injured) and all-rounders Greg Mail and Ian Moran (sharing the Twenty20 spoils in South Africa).

Hughston was at the crease for 286 minutes before being run out with 11 boundaries and a six next to his name. He shared a 154-run third-wicket partnership with Mitchell Brown (54) before they lost their wickets within 10 runs of each other. But Jamie Brown (30 not out) and Luke Dudman (25) kept the momentum going to gain first innings points.

Sutherland Seconds had two century-makers to thank for their first innings win.

Chasing 301, Kurt Brown (123) and Joel Burnett (116 not out) helped the hosts reach 6-304 at Glen McGrath Oval.

Sutherland Thirds racked up 6-264 to run down Sydney University’s 204 at No.2 Oval, while Sutherland Fourths batted out the day to be 8-361 at stumps in reply to Sydney University’s 7(dec)-404 at Sutherland Oval.

Sydney University Fifths carried the day when they rolled Sutherland for 124 in reply to their 214 to take first innings points at St Paul’s College Oval.

Meanwhile, opener Scott Henry continued his rich vein of form with 50 off 34 deliveries in Sydney University’s Twenty20 Cup win over Bankstown at Bankstown Memorial Oval on Sunday.

Having won the toss and batted, the Students put on 8-123 off their 20 overs, before restricting Bankstown to 9-114 and claim the points and make it two from two in the Cup.

Henry’s innings backed up his 122 for NSW Second XI against Victoria Second XI during the week.

In other SUCC news, Sydney University had a big involvement in the Sydney Sixers’ unbeaten run through the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in South Africa. The Sixers defeat the Highveld Lions by 10 wickets in the final in Johannesburg.

As general manager of the Sydney Sixers, Stuart Clark was the architect of putting the winning side together. All-rounder Ian Moran played a key role in some of the early round matches, while Greg Mail was assistant coach of the winning outfit. Mail and Moran will be welcomed back to Sydney University Firsts when they take on Gordon in a Round 4 two-day clash at Sydney University No.1 Oval, starting on Saturday. The Students will back up at the same venue on Sunday for a Round 3 Twenty20 clash against Campbelltown-Camden.
